Sensonum Audio for the Refreshed Tesla Model Y Goes on Sale

On 1 September 2026, Sensonum officially launched its audio system developed for the refreshed Model Y. For rear-wheel-drive owners, the focus is clear: the nine-speaker factory system handles daily listening, but its limited bass becomes more apparent on the highway or during attentive listening. The unused factory subwoofer location in the luggage compartment highlights room for improvement.

Brand background: OEM supply experience

Sensonum's parent, Potnia, was founded in London in 1999. The product range has received a British royal honorary title, and Sensonum supplies Lamborghini OEM audio. Core development members come from Harman. Technical Development Director Mao Fengwei has nearly twenty years in automotive-electronics R&D management, established Harman's Shanghai and Suzhou centers and contributed to OEM deliveries for Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volvo and Jaguar Land Rover. That OEM supply experience informs its aftermarket products.

A solution developed specifically for the refreshed Model Y

This is a dedicated vehicle solution rather than a collection of generic speakers. Of the nine factory drivers, two tweeters and five midrange drivers are retained after testing. The eight-inch mid-bass drivers are replaced and a subwoofer is added. The completed system has 14 drivers, including new rear surround and overhead speakers. An eight-inch dual-voice-coil subwoofer in a ported enclosure fits the factory provision on the right of the luggage compartment. The separate 2000 W amplifier also fits an available factory location, preserving luggage storage space.

The amplifier uses a 16-channel Class-D digital design with 13 channels in use. It combines a Renesas RH850 controller, ADI SHARC-series DSP and Asahi Kasei AK4619 codec supporting 192 kHz / 24-bit high-resolution audio. The core DSP and codec choices follow OEM development standards.

The listening experience: Immersive Spatial Audio

The DSP's waveform-recognition algorithm divides ordinary stereo into direct sound, positioned instruments and ambient reverberation. Recorded Model Y parameters covering body-panel reflections, interior materials, seat absorption and cabin reflections guide active spatial correction. The algorithm compensates for standing waves, echoes and attenuated frequency bands in real time.

The three signal groups are distributed according to the speaker layout. Ambient reverberation spreads through surround units while overhead drivers create height. The goal is a structured 3D stage, with vocals forward and instruments around the listener, rather than simply higher volume. Correction also supports a consistent experience between front and rear seats.

Independent installation and brand-backed support

The DSP amplifier operates as an independent audio system, receiving audio and using a compatible power supply without reading or writing CAN-bus data or rewriting vehicle-control protocols. It is an active audio device. Installation architecture and the applicability of the vehicle warranty must be assessed separately.

The solution uses compatible connectors and wiring and prioritizes factory mounting positions, avoiding wire cutting, drilling and cutting without rewriting vehicle-control protocols. The amplifier is an independent active audio device. That architecture is not a guarantee that the vehicle warranty is unaffected. Confirm audio-product after-sales support, installation responsibilities and vehicle-warranty coverage separately. Any additional written brand commitment is subject to the actual document and applicable terms.

Tuning does not require a return to the dealer. Sensonum is among the aftermarket brands offering a dedicated app, with depth focus, front focus, rear focus, mix level, bass enhancement and soundfield diffusion adjustable from −10 to +10 in real time. Users can change their settings after installation. Remote OTA updates also support revisions to firmware and sound algorithms over time.

Automotive-grade component quality

The amplifier's inductors pass AEC-Q200 qualification. The most demanding model completes 1000 hours of aging at 165 °C, with fifteen tests reporting no failures. The 54-pin connector is supplied by a Harman-designated supplier, with measured retention more than twice the minimum requirement. All wiring is automotive-grade, rated from −40 °C to 125 °C and designed for vehicle service life. OEM-level pre-delivery testing supports long-term stability.

Availability

Sensonum audio for the refreshed Model Y went on sale on 1 September 2026. It addresses limited bass and demanding mid-bass playback in the rear-wheel-drive nine-speaker configuration while improving stage structure and detail. Whether to upgrade depends on the listening experience the owner wants.
