From first curiosity to attentive listening, confident selection and owner recommendations, Sensonum's Tesla audio system brings its engineering experience to people who care about music. Ongoing user feedback helps refine the experience. The system represents a broader cabin-listening upgrade and is attracting attention among Tesla owners.
The starting point was an empty subwoofer location. Rear-wheel-drive Model Y owners often find nine factory speakers adequate for ordinary driving, but thinner on the highway or with bass-heavy music. The unused factory provision in the luggage compartment shows where the system could be improved.
Sensonum is a premium acoustics brand under Potnia, established in London in 1999. Its product range has received a British royal honorary title, and it supplies Lamborghini OEM audio. Core engineers previously worked at Harman China. Technical Development Director Mao Fengwei has nearly twenty years in automotive audio, leading deliveries with Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volvo and Jaguar Land Rover. This OEM background supports its aftermarket development.
Developed for the refreshed Model Y
The solution is designed around the refreshed Model Y's factory structure. Two tweeters and five midrange drivers are retained after testing, the eight-inch mid-bass units are replaced, and the missing subwoofer is added. The completed layout has 14 units, including rear surround and overhead speakers. An eight-inch dual-voice-coil subwoofer in a ported enclosure occupies the factory provision and preserves luggage space.
A separate amplifier with a nominal maximum power of 2000 W fits an available factory location. Its 16-channel Class-D design uses 13 channels and combines a Renesas RH850 controller, ADI SHARC-series DSP and Asahi Kasei AK4619 codec supporting 192 kHz / 24-bit high-resolution audio. The DSP and codec are central to the system's processing capabilities.
Creating a three-dimensional soundstage
Waveform recognition separates incoming stereo into direct sound, positioned instruments and ambient reverberation. Recorded Model Y parameters for panels, trim, seat absorption and cabin reflections guide active correction of standing waves, echoes and attenuated frequency bands. The separated signals are distributed through the speaker layout, with surrounds carrying ambience and overhead drivers establishing height.
The resulting stage places vocals forward, instruments around the listener and spatial layers overhead. Correction aims for a consistent experience in front and rear seats, reducing the need to adjust the stage for a particular position.
Careful installation, warranty support and independent tuning
The solution uses compatible connectors and wiring and prioritizes factory mounting positions, avoiding wire cutting, drilling and cutting without rewriting vehicle-control protocols. The amplifier is an independent active audio device. That architecture is not a guarantee that the vehicle warranty is unaffected. Confirm audio-product after-sales support, installation responsibilities and vehicle-warranty coverage separately. Any additional written brand commitment is subject to the actual document and applicable terms.
Owners retain control after installation through a dedicated app. Depth focus, front focus, rear focus, mix level, bass enhancement and soundfield diffusion can be adjusted from −10 to +10 in real time without returning to a dealer. Firmware and sound algorithms also support remote OTA updates.
Automotive-grade quality standards
The amplifier inductors pass AEC-Q200 qualification, with the most demanding model undergoing 1000 hours at 165 °C and fifteen tests without failures. A Harman-designated supplier provides the 54-pin connector, fully tested to Harman requirements, with retention more than twice the minimum. Wiring is automotive-grade, rated from −40 °C to 125 °C and designed for vehicle service life.
Closing thoughts
Sensonum's Tesla audio system is now available. It addresses the limited bass and mid-bass performance of the factory nine-speaker configuration while improving soundstage and detail. Contact official Sensonum channels for compatibility and installation information.
